A tribute to Logan

James “Logan” Howlett also known as Wolverine is a comic book character.

I was first introduced to this character in the X-Men cartoon shows (I did not read the comics). Later on, the character was brought to the big screen in the live-action film X-Men (2003). Wolverine became so popular it got its own spin-off movie The Wolverine (2013).

The X-Men movies and the Wolverine Movies are interconnected. To understand the connections between the movies and Wolverine’s story the timeline will be explained in the following video. Before watching the video note that there are some spoilers coming.

The Role of Wolverine

Wolverine is played by Hugh Jackman. By the time the first X-Men movie was released, I had no idea who he was. I started looking for his previous works and came across a few videos from the drama series Correlli (1995). The first X-Men was his first big-budget Hollywood movie.

According to the Actor, Logan (2017) will be the last time he will portray the character of Wolverine. He has grown into the role and worked hard to improve the character’s image. He played this role for 17 years. During these 17 years, the Actor had the opportunity to work on other sci-fi movie projects such as The Fountain, Van Helsing, and Real Steel. He also worked on many other genres of movies showing his acting and singing skills. He participated in many Broadway shows, hosted the Tony Awards in 2003, 2004, and 2005, formed his own production company in 2005, and hosted the Oscars in 2009. It is sad to see him leave but it is also understandable that he would like to work on other projects having all the talents that he has.

The Final Chapter

The last installment in the Wolverine Franchise is not for children. The movie has many shocking crude scenes that surprised many people in the theater including me.

Normally the last movie of a franchise is not the best but this is not the case for Logan. The narrative of the story is good (if you are a die-hard fan you will recognize many references in the story).

You will see an old (almost defeated) Wolverine struggling to live and helping an ill Charles in a dystopian future. There are new characters introduced with very solid background stories. The action scenes are hard to watch but are well executed. The emotional scenes will leave you with wet eyes (at the least).

There are a few themes in the movie like the refugee situation (fleeing to the Canadian border), the diversity (interracial) issue (children with different ethnicities) and the use of power over low-income people, and violation of human rights that reflect the current problem we have in the world.

Final thoughts

It is the perfect way to say goodbye to Logan. This is the best movie from the franchise. If you have not seen any X-Men or Wolverine movies you can still see this one. It is true that there are many X-Men references for the fans but it’s also a story about family.

Will you miss seeing Hugh as Logan? Do you also think this is the best movie from the franchise? Feel free to leave your comments.

  1. I remember reading a few of the comic books about Wolverine. When X-Men came out I couldn’t wait to see the movie and I have loved all of the X-Men and Wolverine movies. I have not seen Logan yet but I intend to. Great Article of this superhero. I think I liked that he never wanted to be a superhero, he just wanted to be left alone. Yet still stood up for all the little guys.

    1. I hope you enjoy the movie. I did not read the comics like you. What I know about X-Men & Wolverine came from watching the cartoons when I was a kid and later the movies.

  2. I watched this with my boyfriend last night and was actually shocked by the crude violence that was displayed. I knew that it would have some gore because c’mon it’s Wolverine, but what they did was so over the top I was truly not expecting it and I can’t say I’ve seen something so detailed in a movie before. But I do give my props to whoever did makeup and editing for that movie, it was really gory but the affects were awesome and that should be appreciated because it’s clear a lot of people put a lot of time and effort into this movie

    1. Hi Hailey,

I agree with you. I believe there are some horror movies where they tried such scenes but the effects were not the same. Maybe because we know his backstory and know of his frustrations that let us appreciate the effort they make to make those scenes. It was still a surprise.

  3. I haven’t seen this last installment and I hope I’m not disappointed lol. I usually don’t have high expectations going in to watching movies.
I have however seen all the Wolverine movies and of course will HAVE to see this one.
I have enjoyed all the movies portrayed by Hugh Jackman and hope this one surprises me in a good way.

    1. Hi Outer Beauty,

I believe you will be surprised. The film is completely different compared to the others:

-The first element you will noticed that it is not rated R for nothing (you will see action scenes you did not see before)

      – The characters are well written and you can follow the story (and feel for them)

  4. Great tribute, Dira, and I’m sure he’ll enjoy this if he read it! Wolverine has ALWAYS been my favorite comic book character growing up, so it should come as no surprise that I enjoyed reading every second this article! That really sucks that Logan will not be playing the character anymore, because he was really good at it. Let’s hope the next person performs just as well as he did!

    1. Hi Brandon,
I’m glad you enjoy it. I see you’ll have difficulty calling him by his real name which is very normal at this point. For many of us he will always be Logan “the Wolverine”

  5. I can’t believe Logan is going to be leaving his character role after the movie. He did such an amazing job throughout the whole series. Hugh Jackman is definitely one of my favorite actors. I’ve seen him in many movies such as most of the X-men series and Les Miserables. Thanks for a great and informative article.

  6. I loved watching Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. I’ve watched him from the first X-Men movie and was hooked. The only standalone film I’ve seen so far was the X-Men Origins film. I’ve heard good things about Logan and I can’t wait to see it as well as “The Wolverine”. I will be sad to see Hugh go, but I do appreciate the work he did for this character

    1. Hi Will,

Thanks for dropping by. I hope you enjoy the movie (just in case: bring some tissues with you when your going to the movie theater).

  7. Hello Dira,

I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of the X-men universe and Wolverine is my favorite character.
I was stunned by “Logan”. To be honest I didn’t expect a movie so gruesome, dark and dramatic.
It is made in the spirit of the Batman series directed by Christopher Nolan and that is why I liked it so much.
    I’ll definitely miss Wolverine.

    1. Hi Asen,

You are not the only one with that reaction. The story was engaging and that made me stay till the end. We basically have seen the character grow and got engaged with his story so I think many of us will miss him.
