Arrival arrived at the 2017 Oscars, and so did Science Fiction & Fantasy.
Over the years the Science Fiction (sci-fi) and Fantasy genres has been present at the Oscars, which is no secret.
What stands out to me this particular year is the type of unconventional sci-fi movies that are nominated, their popularity and the categories wherein they were nominated.
If you were wondering which Sci-Fi & Fantasy (including animation) movies were nominated for the 2017 Oscar here is the list per category:

Unusual Sci Fi Films nominated
Films like Arrival, Hidden Figures, Passengers and the Lobsters are not your usual Science Fiction films.
Arrival instead of being the typical alien invasion action movie surprised many with its story line which makes you sit back and rethink about humanity and the consequences of our actions.
Hidden Figures is not exactly a science fiction movie but the story is important and inspirational to the genre. Two words: human computers.
Passengers rather than focusing on the dangers in space, its main story is the romantic relationship between the 2 passengers on the ship.
The Lobster has combined science fiction and romance focusing more on relationship than science fiction. The story takes place in a near future (funny how most of things looks the same as now).
One thing that stands out from these movies is the focus on human connection which is sadly something that has deteriorated the last few years (especially by social media). We don’t talk and listen to each other anymore.
These movies also show the dangers of what could happened if there is no communication, the consequences of the choices we make (Arrival) or what the consequences could be if you don’t speak up (Hidden Figures). I’m really happy to see these movies doing well and that people accept them.
I remember a few years back when we used to go to the restaurant with a group of friends and talk to each other and making jokes. Today everybody is looking at their phones not really paying attention to the conversation or rather texting each other (while being in the same room). Hopefully people understand the message and take action: communicate (talk and listen) in your circles.
Science Fiction and Humanity
The change was probably caused by current happenings in the world showing people being intolerant, not communicating with each other, being judgmental, etc. Or could the diversity issue widely discussed during last years Oscars pushed artists to create better stories with diversity in mind?
Whatever the reason for the change these movies contribute in giving the audiences essential topics to reflect on their humanity: the relationship with yourself and your relationship with others, stand up for your cause and speak up, and most importantly together we are stronger (no matter where you came from or what you believe in).
What do you think of these nominations? Have you seen one of these movies already? Feel free to leave your comments.
