Best of 2017 Sci-Fi Movies Vol.1

Best of 2017 Sci-Fi Movies Vol.12017 was a great year for Sci-Fi movies. From monster movies to socially impactful movies, it has been a roller coaster ride for Sci-Fi movie watchers. To give you an idea what we mean with the best of 2017, we basically look at the story of the film, the performances, the movie themes and more importantly the impact they have on movie viewers.

To be clear it’s not a list of best-rated movies or most financially successful movies (if one of the films on the list happens to be in one of these categories, it’s just coincidence). And it’s not about the critics’ views or the money earned, it’s about what the audience is left with after seeing these movies. Let’s look at the first batch of best movies of 2017:

13. Attraction

First on the list is a Russian sci-fi drama. If it seems familiar to you, it’s because you may have read about this on the post “5 interesting foreign sci-fi fantasy films Vol.4”. The story centers on the crashing of a spaceship in Moscow. The government decided not to make contact and let the ship fix itself as the ship appears to attract water to restore itself. The government introduced a martial law and many people started protesting against the alien ship.

The visual effects look cool and the performances are great. The movie is a social allegory and shows many aspects of the human behavior. More specifically: how easily people can be manipulated when they are angry or unhappy with a situation. How bullies take advantage of a situation. And how one act of kindness or love can change the perspective of a complete civilization. It is a mirror for us to look at because the manipulation, of people using their anger or unhappiness, is happening today and it’s sad to see that many people don’t or are not willing to accept that this is happening.

12. Life

The film tells the story of a crew on the international space station that is looking into one of the most important discoveries; evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. They began their research and discover a rapidly evolving life form that caused extension on Mars. The Sci-Fi horror thriller received mixed reviews from critics. Some liked the suspense and the acting, others didn’t. in the middle of a conflicting situation (the crew’s) individual temperaments lead occasionally to poor decision making. This type of scenario is great for the storyline.

The visual effects are great. It has an unexpected twist in the end which differentiates it from other space monster film like Alien Covenant. The story aspires to give hope but failed because of the misfortune caused by the bad decisions made. Overall it is an entertaining movie full of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

11. King Kong: Skull Island

A team of scientist accompanied by Vietnam war soldiers and a British Special Air Service captain who will guide the expedition on a recently discovered island, Skull Island. The unexpected happened when they encounter terrifying creatures including the powerful Kong. The film is a reboot of the King Kong franchise and you probably have read about this already in “Giant Monsters: Reviving the Legends”.

The film was well received by critics and a commercial success.  What stands out in this film is the great cinematography and the visual effects. To be honest the story of the humans could have been written but it’s sufficiently entertaining. A sequel to the film titled Godzilla vs Kong is expected to be released in 2020. Fans of monsters movies will enjoy this film.

10. Godzilla: Planet of Monsters

Let’s first start by telling you that this is a Japanese anime distributed by Netflix. The film tells the story of a half-century war against gigantic monsters, the human race decides to escape planet earth for safety. A small group was formed to go on a mission to explore a new planet only to find that it’s dominated by Godzilla.

The film is the first installment of a trilogy and is basically a 3D version of the King of monsters with exciting action sequences. The film received mixed reviews but was very well received by the audience.

9. Blade Runner 2049

A sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner, the film continues the story of Blade Runners who hunts down rogue replicants. The film was very well received by critics praising the performances, soundtrack, cinematography, and direction. The majority of the male audience liked, the female audience on the other hand not so much.

Many unnecessary visuals could have been replaced with actual dialogue that could have a more added value to the story. The film shows women as either victims, prostitutes or housewives that are weak. There is no single strong female character in the movie. The theme of fertility in the movie represents power, a power that is taken and controlled by a man. It is a conflicting story to watch but one cannot ignore the impact of the movie. It is a thoughtful science fiction with a few action sequences that provoke discussions on several social topics.

8. Get out

You probably have heard about this as a horror film and you are probably wondering why it’s on this list. Well, it tells the story of Chris, a black man who is visiting the family of his white girlfriend. There he noticed that all servants are black and are acting strangely. Next, to the horror angle of the story, there is a sci-fi angle that may explain some of the happenings in the film.

The film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was well received by critics. The film has a heavy racial theme and is a satire on the behavior of West Wing liberals who are supposedly against racism.

7. Okja

You may recognize this title from the previous post ”5 Interesting Foreign Sci-Fi Fantasy Films Vol.5”. The film tells a story of friendship between a little girl and a super pig. This South-Korean American has the vibe of E.T. The Extra-Terrestial (1982) and Free Willy (1993). The film is a satire of the corporate world and the obsession to obtain gain no matter the costs. It also explores human values. Overall it is an interesting film with great performances.

Here you go, the first batch of best in Sci-Fi of 2017. Stories that made us laugh, cry and reflect on current issues we are dealing with in the world. Note that this is the first part of the 2017 list of sci-fi movies. Want to know the rest of the list? Stay tuned for the next upcoming post.

  1. I love your list. I am happy to say I saw a few of these. King Kong and Get Out were good. I will be checking out some more when I get time. Thanks for these lists I really love movies so you help save me research.

    1. Hi Melissa,

I am glad you enjoy the movies and hope you get a chance to see the others.
Thanks for taking some time to read my post.

  2. Hello Dira,

Indeed, 2017 was great in terms if sci-fi movies.
The genre becomes stronger every year.
My favorite one is the multi-awarded ‘Get Out’ which was fantastic – scary and creative.
I didn’t like much ‘Life’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’, though. They were both emotionless, at least this is my opinion.
King Kong: Skull Island was super fun and I am impatiently expecting the sequel to air as soon as possible.
I have to watch Okja, because I missed it!

  3. Hi there. Great list of movies, some of which I have not seen yet. Loved King Kong, was very happy that they finally made a decent Kong movie as the last few were pretty bad in my opinion. I may have to miss Okja I think, not my cup of tea, lol. Did u like Bladerunner 2049? Thanks for some great reviews here. 🙂

    1. Hi Carl,

Yes, finally a good Kong Movie.
Everyone has their own taste in sci-fi. For me, I didn’t like this version of Blade Runner as much as the first installment. But I can’t deny that it’s still a good movie but I think they could have removed some of the unnecessary visuals and include more dialogue and make it more so the viewer is more emotionally invested in the story (but that is just my opinion).

  4. Here I am again Dira:) What has the program for tonight? Maybe Attraction or LIfe. One of these two I will watch tonight, they look good:)
There is any of them on 3d? Where can I find some good sci-fi 3d movie? You know when you see those special effects on 3d is different, you are in the movie 🙂 I have gravity on 3 d and is awesome and Avatar, Starwars and a few more. Great effects.
I really thanks for the help with your list, I think I wouldn’t have the patience to go through Netflix programs and choose, I look on your site and I find:) Good job:)
    have a nice day.

    1. Hi Cristina,

Happy to see you again! Those are good choices. With #D I am assuming you mean Blue Ray right? In that case yes, Life is available in Blu Ray.
Attraction I don’t believe you will find in blu ray or DVD since it is a Russian film. I haven’t seen a DVD or blue ray of the Russian movies I have watched. If not for streaming services I wouldn’t have watched Attraction.
In all the other cases I believe you will easily find a blu ray version of the movie. I am glad I could help.
      See you soon 🙂
